Email Authentication-Debunking the Myths
Top Reasons 50% Email Marketers Aren't Authenticating Messages
| MYTH: |
Authentication was designed as a solution to spam and it doesn't work. |
| TRUTH: |
Authentication was designed as the framework to establish reputation, which is the solution to stopping spam. It was never intended to be a silver bullet against spam, however it is probably impossible to solve the spam problem without authentication. |
| MYTH: |
Complying with email authentication standards is difficult. |
| TRUTH: |
Particularly for senders, authentication is straightforward. The greatest challenge is compiling a list of all IP addresses used to send email. DKIM will be a painless MTA upgrade for most users. |
| MYTH: |
There is no benefit to authenticating. |
| TRUTH: |
The benefit of authentication is that it ensures your messages don't get blocked once the major ISPs start mandating authenticated email. It already makes a difference at two of the biggest consumer ISPs - Yahoo! and Hotmail/MSN. |
| MYTH: |
Sender ID or DKIM? There is no consensus on one authentication standard, so I don't know which one to support. |
| TRUTH: |
Particularly for senders, the question is moot. Every sender should be implementing both solutions as they are complementary; not mutually exclusive. Both Sender ID and DomainKeys are seeing rapid adoption and it will be imperative to comply with both standards on all mailings to ensure messages get priority delivery. |
